Now Ernie I do have to admit that I encountered that Abrams' essay in Introduction to Graduate Study in English. The essay was written at a time when serious scholars of literature were attempting to unravel the mystery of the authors blending of creativity, rhetoric, theme, organization, coherency and continuity and art all summarized in that bright and shining light on the library table termed "a theory of literary composition," the "lamp" of Abrams' landmark essay. In fairness to Abrams, one can instantly sense his enthusiasm as he relays to readers what he believes qualities as a viable theory of literary composition, notwithstanding that Abrams wrote an essay in such a manner that would cause a corpse to snore loudly and deeply.

I must confess that I enjoy most literature. I prefer picking up a book, treating that cover with the respect I would give my dearest and closest friend, flipping the pages as I read, even going back to memorable passages and words that the author set to paper that touch my inner being. You wrote "Kindle, spindle." I must concur with your sentiment. Nothing replaces a book. The most personable room in my home is my study, replete with my personal library. Those books inspire, cause musing, and carry me to places I want to be, and even bring me to friends like you and Dewayne among others.

And then, I must apologize for the two errors in my earlier comment here: Well--should have been why and here--should have been hear. That's what I get for writing in haste.

Thanks for the suggestion Rob but dull books don’t work for me. I have to be interested. There is something about getting into the story and lying down that seems to calm me and make it easy to drop off. Maybe getting the mind away from the everyday world does it.

Oh Ernie you don't to grab a book. Well spoil an encounter with an otherwise great tome? Get a copy of H.L. Abrams essay on criticism "The Mirror and the Lamp." I guarantee you will drop off to LaLa Land within minutes. That essay, a landmark no less, but the longest, dullest, thing written in the English language. You won't here this literature scholar badmouthing the written word, excepting this.

Why spend a good $20 to $30 on a book or even Sominex when you get this mindnumbing essay?

I go to the used book store. Three for the price of one. I like the feel of paper. Batteries unneeded. Kindle Schmindle. Now into Manifold Time by Stephen Baxter.

Hmm Ernie starting to feel like uh Cogley? I just watched Court Martial again one of those ST:TOS shows that remains very timely today. What an amazing actor was Elisha Cook Jr.!

Can't sleep? I have the answer. Shut off your 'puter. Prop up pillows. Grab a book. A book that can lead your mind to wander. You will then pass on to a bliss of dreams. It works for me anyway.
