Breakfast Links (Wed Sept 9th,2009)

9

twitterCropMorning kind of hard to think of this as Hump Day when most of us in the US just worked Tuesday, I was up very early this morning Twittering with the Nighttime Twitterverse, my fellow nation of insomniacs and night owls.

This got me thinking a year or two ago many of us bloggers who are regular readers of each others web spaces would be up leaving comments about “Trial news” Porn or whatever.

Now we just Tweet all night while no doubt watching porn!

A couple of Breakfast Links are Twitter related.

Tweetdeck the AP many of us use on our iPhones/iTouch and our PC’s has a major update this morning, be sure and download. While Tweetdeck is still in beta my experience has been mostly positive with occasional freeze up’s requiring a simple close and restart of the app.

TweetDeck v 0.30

Last night I pointed out to several Twitter users I had read a post about the overnite web use which makes us all wonder when do we sleep?

It’s 11 p.m. Do you know where your neighbors are? Chances are they’re online. According to a study, North Americans have been staying up late to do their Internet surfing this summer, so late that the peak usage for the whole day has been at 11 p.m. Eastern time.

At 2 a.m. Eastern, overall traffic is as high as it is at 9 a.m., when people are logging in at work.

What Keeps You Up All Night Surfing The Internet?

Today is Apple Ipod day in Cuppertino so we will be expecting breathless announcements of new gadgets and Guru Steve Jobs welcome return after his serious health problems.

Great Expectations Of An Apple Event

Of course they cut prices as well, should have known I bought my first iTouch (replacing previous ipods) 2 weeks ago! Oh well I knew this price cut was coming!

While on the subject of iPhones those pesky nagging rumors that cell phone use causes brain tumors just wont go away!

The wireless industry has been telling us for years that cellphones don’t cause brain cancer, but a new study raises doubts. A group called the International EMF Collaborative has issued a report warning that regular use of cellphones can result in a significant risk of brain tumors.

Porn News?

Do you have any? Seems the whole industry was on holiday like the rest of us, many were at Southern Decadence and we can expect the Fierce Phillip Ashton to give us a full report on the weekend!

So some snippets…

Can’t sleep? I have the answer. Shut off your ‘puter. Prop up pillows. Grab a book. A book that can lead your mind to wander. You will then pass on to a bliss of dreams. It works for me anyway.

Book those things on Kindle right? ;)
Hmm Ernie starting to feel like uh Cogley? I just watched Court Martial again one of those ST:TOS shows that remains very timely today. What an amazing actor was Elisha Cook Jr.!

I go to the used book store. Three for the price of one. I like the feel of paper. Batteries unneeded. Kindle Schmindle. Now into Manifold Time by Stephen Baxter.

  4. DeWayne says:

thanks Ernie always forget about Memory Alpha (I go to IMDB first) Cook had an amazing and long lived career.

  5. Rob says:

Oh Ernie you don’t to grab a book. Well spoil an encounter with an otherwise great tome? Get a copy of H.L. Abrams essay on criticism “The Mirror and the Lamp.” I guarantee you will drop off to LaLa Land within minutes. That essay, a landmark no less, but the longest, dullest, thing written in the English language. You won’t here this literature scholar badmouthing the written word, excepting this.

Why spend a good $20 to $30 on a book or even Sominex when you get this mindnumbing essay?

  6. DeWayne says:

I agree Rob that book and some others can be great sleep aids!

  7. ernie says:

Thanks for the suggestion Rob but dull books don’t work for me. I have to be interested. There is something about getting into the story and lying down that seems to calm me and make it easy to drop off. Maybe getting the mind away from the everyday world does it.

  8. Rob says:

Now Ernie I do have to admit that I encountered that Abrams’ essay in Introduction to Graduate Study in English. The essay was written at a time when serious scholars of literature were attempting to unravel the mystery of the authors blending of creativity, rhetoric, theme, organization, coherency and continuity and art all summarized in that bright and shining light on the library table termed “a theory of literary composition,” the “lamp” of Abrams’ landmark essay. In fairness to Abrams, one can instantly sense his enthusiasm as he relays to readers what he believes qualities as a viable theory of literary composition, notwithstanding that Abrams wrote an essay in such a manner that would cause a corpse to snore loudly and deeply.

I must confess that I enjoy most literature. I prefer picking up a book, treating that cover with the respect I would give my dearest and closest friend, flipping the pages as I read, even going back to memorable passages and words that the author set to paper that touch my inner being. You wrote “Kindle, spindle.” I must concur with your sentiment. Nothing replaces a book. The most personable room in my home is my study, replete with my personal library. Those books inspire, cause musing, and carry me to places I want to be, and even bring me to friends like you and Dewayne among others.

And then, I must apologize for the two errors in my earlier comment here: Well–should have been why and here–should have been hear. That’s what I get for writing in haste.
